With his win over Clay Guida, Gray Maynard has again
positioned himself securely in the lightweight title picture. Nate Diaz is
still the confirmed number one contender, until otherwise stated, and I have
said all along I doubt Nate will risk his shot. Also I don’t think rebounding
with a win over Guida is enough to warrant a fight with the eventual winner of
Bendo/Edgar/Diaz. With Nate effectively sidelined, only one fight makes sense
for Maynard: Anthony Pettis. Pettis was guaranteed a shot when he came to the
UFC but settled on a bout with Guida when he learned Maynard/Edgar were
rematching. Pettis lost and had to work his way back to the top, but he is
treading water waiting for Nate. Pettis/Maynard should happen to set up an
eventual number one contender who will fight for a title by Spring time next year.
